Silver PhytoNutrients: Unravelling the Secrets of the Mediterranean Diet

In a world where the pursuit of healthy aging is becoming increasingly important, scientists are delving deep into the potential of natural plant compounds, known as phytonutrients, to unlock the secrets to longevity and well-being. The Silver PhytoNutrients project, a collaborative effort between Activ’Inside and the Molecules of Biological Interest team at the Institut des sciences de la vigne et du vin (ISVV) in Bordeaux, is at the forefront of this ground-breaking research. Together, we aim to unravel the mysteries surrounding the Mediterranean diet and its impact on aging, particularly through the study of polyphenols.

A Journey Several Years in the Making:

The Silver PhytoNutrients project has been a vision of ours for several long years. We have eagerly sought the opportunity to collaborate with the esteemed ISVV to unravel the mysteries of phytonutrients and their impact on aging. This project has finally come to fruition, filling us with anticipation for the ground-breaking discoveries that lie ahead.

Understanding the Link between the Mediterranean diet and Aging:

The Mediterranean diet has long been revered for its health benefits, and researchers are now focusing on its key components to better understand their impact on aging. Polyphenols, abundant in grapes, have shown immense potential in promoting longevity. Similarly, carotenoids, found in various fruits and vegetables, have been linked to a reduced risk of age-related issues.

The Silver PhytoNutrients project aims to comprehensively characterize the metabolic fate of phytonutrients, particularly polyphenols found in the Mediterranean diet. By studying the metabolic pathways of grape and saffron metabolites, the project seeks to uncover the mechanisms of action and effects of these compounds on the aging process. This research aims to establish correlations between specific metabolites and the observed beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet, thus providing valuable insights into the key factors contributing to healthy aging.

A Strong Partnership for Unparalleled Expertise:

The collaboration between Activ’Inside and ISVV brings together a team of dedicated experts equipped with cutting-edge technology. ISVV lab boasts state-of-the-art machines and tools for analysing saffron and polyphenol metabolites in blood and biological tissues. With this analytical prowess, we can closely study the fate of these compounds in the body, ensuring accurate identification and characterization of the molecules.

The team’s expertise in advanced techniques and machinery such as our U-HPLC /MS – MS – MS (Ultra High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography coupled to Mass spectrometry) housed in the shared section of the ISVV lab, further augments our ability to detect and understand these elusive compounds at exceptionally low levels. This level of precision enhances the finesse and precision of our molecule analysis. With this sophisticated tool, we can delve deep into the molecules we study, even detecting minuscule quantities with exceptional accuracy. Additionally, access to NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) technology through this partnership, empowers our team to precisely identify the elements of these phytonutrients and elucidate their structure.

From Cellular Models to Clinical Studies:

While the starting point was observational studies showing the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet, the Silver PhytoNutrients project is based on a comprehensive step-by-step approach.

Cellular models offer valuable insights into the metabolism of phytonutrients, shedding light on how these compounds interact with our cells. Researchers use these models to unravel the complex processes involved in the absorption and utilization of silver phytonutrients, gaining a deeper understanding of their mechanisms of action. These insights help bridge the gap between cellular studies and clinical trials, where comprehensive evaluations of silver phytonutrients guide the design and implementation of subsequent clinical studies.

The Future of Healthy Aging:

With the Silver PhytoNutrients project, the aim is not just to gain scientific knowledge but also to develop new natural products tailored for the Silver Economy market. Activ’Inside as a driving force behind this initiative, envisions a future where innovative plant extracts enriched with silver phytonutrients empower individuals to age gracefully and maintain their well-being.

The project’s outcomes include multiple publications, the first being a paper demonstrating the protective effects of saffron metabolites on neurons under oxidative stress in vitro.

These publications will disseminate the project’s findings, contributing to the growing body of knowledge in the field of healthy aging. The project has three other publications in preparation, underscoring the depth and significance of their research, so stay tuned!

Some of the expert researchers involved in this project participated in this year’s FBHC (4th international conference on Food Bioactives and Health). Among them, Lisa Texier presented a poster focused on her thesis work, delving into the glucuronidation of catechin and epicatechin – two essential polyphenols abundant in the Mediterranean diet. This participation at FBHC provides a valuable platform for sharing these findings and showcases the knowledge and expertise of the researchers involved in the Silver Phytonutrients project.

Local collaboration ISVV

Local Collaboration for Global Impact:

The Silver PhytoNutrients project is a testament to the collaborative spirit in Bordeaux. Leveraging the expertise of the ISVV and partnering with local institutions such as the Institut des Corps Gras & produits apparentés (ITERG) and the regional grape co-product valorisation network, this initiative is setting a new standard in research and development. This project is also supported by La Region Nouvelle Aquitaine

By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and leveraging the region’s rich resources, the project is not only benefiting the local community but also contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the broader nutrition and wellness sector. This collaborative effort extends beyond Bordeaux, as the research findings have the potential to impact individuals worldwide, providing insights into the potential benefits of silver phytonutrients for healthy aging.

A 5-year research endeavor lies ahead for the Silver PhytoNutrients project, and it will be a collaborative endeavour involving a team of approximately fifteen highly skilled researchers, technicians, and engineers. Their collective expertise and knowledge will be instrumental in unravelling the intricate complexities of phytonutrients and their effects on healthy aging. Through their dedicated efforts, we aim to make significant strides in understanding the biological activities of these plant compounds and their potential to enhance the well-being of individuals as they age gracefully.

The Silver PhytoNutrients project represents a significant step forward in unravelling the mysteries of the Mediterranean diet’s impact on aging. Through rigorous scientific exploration, cutting-edge analytical techniques, and a strong collaborative network, this initiative is poised to revolutionize the way we approach aging.

As we eagerly await the project’s ground-breaking findings, one thing is clear: Silver PhytoNutrients hold tremendous promise in shaping a future where aging is synonymous with vitality, well-being, and a life well-lived.
