Interview with an Expert : What Actually Works for Hair Health?

Let’s look beyond the surface

When it comes to hair care, the conversation is shifting. Beyond shampoos and serums, there’s growing interest in what’s happening beneath the surface, at the level of nutrition, biology, and long-term hair health. But with so many claims and formats on the market, it can be hard to know what really makes a difference.

We asked our resident expert Ilona Gille to break down some of the most common assumptions.

Q: Do we really need supplements, or can good topical products do the job on their own?

A: Hair is literally built from the inside. That’s the core idea behind “beauty from within”: supplements can support hair at the source, where the fiber is produced, by helping the body create a healthier hair shaft over time.

Topical products mainly act on the surface. They improve shine, softness, reduce breakage, and support scalp comfort, which is valuable, but they don’t always address the root causes behind shedding or slow growth, such as oxidative stress, micronutrient gaps, stress response, or an imbalanced follicle environment.

That’s why it doesn’t have to be an either/or. An “inside & out” approach can offer the best of both worlds, supporting hair health at the root while enhancing how it looks and feels.

Q: People often think “more is better” when it comes to supplements, does a higher dose actually mean better results?

A: Not necessarily. Dose is only one part of the equation. What really drives results is whether a formula delivers the right actives, in the right form, at a dose that’s both effective and well tolerated, and whether it targets the correct biological pathway for the individual.

What matters more than “more” is smarter formulation:

– Bioavailability: Can the body actually absorb and use the ingredient?
– Synergy: Do the ingredients work together across complementary mechanisms (e.g., antioxidant protection, follicle support, micronutrient balance)?
– Mechanism fit: Does it address the real issue, oxidative stress, inflammation, microcirculation, keratinization, or stress response?

In short, the best products aren’t the loudest about dosage, they’re the ones that are well-designed, evidence-based, and tailored to real needs.

Q: There’s a bit of a perception that gummies are less “serious” than capsules, are they actually less effective?

A: The delivery format doesn’t determine effectiveness, what matters is what your body absorbs and how consistently you take it.

A perfectly formulated capsule won’t deliver results if it’s forgotten, while a well-designed gummy can be highly effective simply because people take it regularly.

Gummies are also evolving – more brands are investing in evidence-backed formulations, and there’s growing scientific interest in their bioavailability and real-world effectiveness.

A gummy can absolutely be as effective as a capsule if it meets the essentials:

– A relevant, effective dose
– Stability of active ingredients
– High-quality manufacturing and transparency
– And most importantly, daily consistency

Q: And what about gender: Do “women’s” hair supplements actually work for men?

A: It really comes down to what’s driving the hair concern. Many of the underlying factors are shared across individuals, regardless of gender, so a “women’s” formula can absolutely work for men if it targets the right mechanisms.

Common drivers include:
– Stress and poor sleep, which can disrupt the hair cycle and trigger shedding
– Oxidative stress and inflammation, which can weaken the follicle environment
– Micronutrient gaps (such as iron, vitamin D, or zinc, depending on the individual)
– Scalp imbalances, like irritation or excess sebum
– Hair fiber fragility, leading to breakage

Bottom line: the most effective supplement isn’t defined by gender, it’s defined by how well it matches the root cause.

So there you have it: when it comes to hair health, it’s less about quick fixes or one-size-fits-all solutions, and more about understanding the bigger picture, inside and out, science and lifestyle, formulation and consistency.
