Collagen peptides

– Endogenous collagen synthesis

Collagen is the main structural protein in cartilage, forming a network of fibers that maintain the structure of the joint, providing fluidity and shock absorption. It helps to regenerate and prevent degradation by stimulating chondrocytes. A preclinical study showed that collagen peptides supplementation significantly increased collagen synthesis in human fibroblasts compared to control, demonstrating their boosting effect on collagen levels.

Vitamin C

– Antioxidant reaction

By neutralising free radicals, vitamin C protects the joints from oxidative damage and reduces the collagen degradation.

– Collagen synthesis & protection

It plays a part in collagen synthesis by acting as a cofactor for enzymes, promoting the activation of cells responsible for collagen production (fibroblasts) and inhibiting its degradation by limiting the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)

A double-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled clinical study showed that:

– After 6 months of supplementation with 10g/day of collagen peptides, significant reductions in pain and improvements in knee functionality were observed compared with placebo (according to the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) – the higher the score, the less pain experienced). Significant improvements in the number of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs score – the higher the score, the more improvement in daily physical activities) were also measured, while no improvement was seen in the placebo group.
