Bilberry has been used for centuries to improve night vision and combat eye disorders such as cataracts and macular degeneration. It contains compounds called anthocyanins, which helps to improve blood flow to the eyes and protect the retina from damage. The effect of Bilberry on the enhancement of night vision was first investigated in studies of Royal Air Force pilots during the Second World War. In these case-reports, improvements in night vision were suggested less than 24 hours after ingesting bilberry jam.

Anthocyanins are pigments that give bilberry its deep blue color. They are powerful antioxidants that protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Anthocyanins have been shown to improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and promote eye health.

Bilberry extract is recognized by several international organizations for its traditional applications in the area of digestive health. Health Canada recognizes it as an astringent that can help relieve diarrhea. WHO not only acknowledges the use of bilberry in traditional medicine as a treatment for diarrhea and intestinal disorders, but also recognizes its inclusion in pharmacopoeias and well-established documents for its oral use in the treatment of acute diarrhea.

Bilberry extract contains anthocyanins which have shown promise in stimulating micro-circulation in capillaries. In a study, anthocyanin treatment resulted in a significant improvement in micro-circulation, as well as reductions in feelings of heaviness, pain, edema, and skin dystrophy. In a separate acute study, those treated with anthocyanins showed a significant increase in flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure, indicating that anthocyanins could improve endothelial function and alleviate the feeling of heavy legs.
