Anthocyanins are a type of flavonoid, which is a class of phytonutrients found in various fruits, vegetables, and grains. They are responsible for the red, purple, and blue colors in many fruits and vegetables, such as red radish, blackcurrants, red grapes, and black carrots.
Anthocyanin-rich plants are often utilized to enhance the immune system, particularly for respiratory health. Anthocyanins possess antibacterial and antiviral properties, and a combination of these compounds derived from different sources could potentially have a greater immune-stimulating effect through a synergistic interaction.
In relation to the beneficial effects of anthocyanins on eye health, research suggests that this molecule family may have a protective effect on the retina, the part of the eye that is responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain. Anthocyanins may help improve blood flow to the retina, which can reduce the risk of retinal damage and improve vision. Additionally, some studies have suggested that anthocyanins may help improve night vision and enhance visual acuity in low light conditions.
