Lemon balm has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for stress, anxiety, and sleep issues. In the 17th century, lemon balm water was used by the Roi-Soleil ladies of the court to relieve nervous discomforts. Today, the anti-stress properties of lemon balm are well documented and recognized by the scientific community.
Lemon balm has been used since the 11th century by Arab doctors for symptomatic treatment of mild gastrointestinal complaints, such as bloating and flatulence. Digestive discomfort is often caused by inflammation in the gut. The anti inflammatory properties of the rosmarinic acid found in lemon balm extract may help reduce this inflammation, thereby improving digestion.
Lemon balm is recommended in traditional medicine to treat PMS symptoms. A recent clinical trial has shown that the daily supplementation of lemon balm extract during 3 consecutive menstrual cycles reduces the severity of physical, psychological and social symptoms of PMS.
