Artichokes have been used as a food and a medicinal plant for thousands of years. They were first cultivated in the Mediterranean region where they were prized for their medicinal properties. The ancient Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus wrote about the medicinal properties of the artichoke plant in the 4th century BCE describing the use of the plant's leaves to treat digestive issues and liver problems.
Scientific research has confirmed many of the traditional uses of artichokes, and artichoke extract is now widely used as a dietary supplement to support digestive health, liver function and cholesterol management contributing to overall heart health. For example, in a recent clinical trial, it was found that supplementation with artichoke leaf extract can lead to significant improvements in cholesterol levels among individuals with primary mild hypercholesterolemia. Specifically, the study found that artichoke extract was effective in increasing good cholesterol levels while also reducing bad and total cholesterol levels in these subjects.
